Paua Room (Toddlers)

Toddler Childcare

We believe it is essential to provide a place where children are nurtured and cared for, and where their growing independence is supported and encouraged. Paua children need time, love and attention to enhance their sense of belonging and to develop their language and motor skills. This is what the Paua room is all about.

Dedicated Space

The Paua Room comprises of two rooms to cater for the different ages and a separate sleep room for those children who still sleep during the day. The room is full of resources to support your child’s expanding creativity and the layout provides opportunities for group and individual play.

Your child will also have access to a dedicated spacious outdoor area with natural grass and mature trees providing a wonderful place to roam and explore. This safe yet stimulating environment enables your child to take healthy risks, and to be an active explorer in a space that’s filled with possibilities.

Our Programme

We understand that alongside love and attention your child needs good routines to help support their growth and development. Together with good routines the Paua room focus is on emotional and physical development, language acquisition and social learning.

Each day your child will work in a small group with a teacher and participate in a structured group time. During group time children are exposed to a range of skills and concepts covering the seven curriculum areas. Group times are universally looked forward to. We know how important it is for children to be able to follow instructions and see a task through to completion.

In addition to supporting children’s routines and providing opportunities for children to take part, the Paua room implements a ‘Being a Good Friend’ programme where children are encouraged to treat each other kindly, fairly and with respect.

Teaching

With child: teacher ratios well above the Ministry of Education’s requirements, we ensure a high level of care, interaction and education with a dedicated focus on your child. The 1:6 teaching ratio provides ample opportunities for the teachers to establish genuine relationships with your child and support their routines and ongoing learning.

Although teachers recognise the importance of planned experiences, they also encourage your child to initiate their own play and explore spontaneously. In the Paua room teachers create an inviting and inspiring environment which piques children’s interest and allows them to make informed decisions about their own learning.

Transitioning to the Pohutukawa Room

The Whales group is a targeted programme for our oldest children in the Paua Room. The purpose of this group is to support children in their transition to the Pohutukawa Room and to further instil and nurture their love of learning. Your child will be participating in a variety of experiences including language, maths, science, art, music and physical age-appropriate experiences in order to enhance their overall development.

The most important aspect of the Whales group is for children to be exposed to concepts in a way that fosters their love of learning and allows their confidence to grow. Each day the Whales will work in a dedicated room where they will partake in mat times, group times and morning/afternoon tea.
