Our Childcare Philosophy

We believe children are inquisitive, capable and competent, and that a partnership with families is fundamental to their well-being. The guiding principles of our philosophy are:

  • Teach me with love
  • Guide me with care
  • Fill me with wonder
  • Imagine what you could be
  • A place for everyone
  • Learning partnership
  • Their future, our present

Teach me with love

Relationships are at the heart of what we do. Relationships with children and their families, with colleagues, between children and relationships with places and things. Authentic relationships include valuing our Summerfield families. As a teaching team we seek to understand your child’s background, interests, strengths, likes, dislikes and ways of learning and knowing.

Guide me with care

Our teachers guide children in becoming responsible citizens and life-long learners by providing supportive and inclusive teaching practices, where children have access to a myriad of opportunities. We provide a balance of structured learning opportunities alongside child-initiated play, allowing our children to explore and discover in a spacious environment that offers a sound education programme.

Fill me with wonder

Summerfield’s learning programme is based on Te Whāriki and we present routines and structure in an environment that also allows children to investigate, explore and make discoveries on their own. We believe this balance enhances children’s curiosity, their sense of belonging and opportunities for formal learning with teacher engagement, alongside exploration and experimentation alone or with peers.

Imagine what you could be

No one else in the world is exactly like you, and we want our children to be proud of who they are. We’ll provide the support, knowledge, tools and structure for children to give things a go and make the most of their time here. At Summerfield we want our children to persevere and feel able to take risks, in order to grow in mind, body and spirit.

A place for everyone

At Summerfield there is room to roam and explore. We know the way the physical environment is configured influences how children feel, act, and behave. Providing a safe yet challenging environment enables children to take healthy risks, and to be active explorers. We have 3 distinct centres, Pipi Room (infants and toddlers), Paua Room (toddlers) and Pohutukawa Room (preschool).

Learning partnership

We have an open-door policy and encourage our families to be involved in Summerfield life. We know that early childhood works best when there is a partnership with families, and we believe in sharing the many special moments from the day with you. We know that a collaborative approach between families/whānau and centre helps support children’s learning, accomplishments and long-term achievement and we prioritise these relationships.

Their future, Our Present

Teachers are the heart of Summerfield. They are encouraged to engage in professional discussions and learning and to be part of making the centre the best it can be. They are an integral part of the Summerfield family and we are committed to their ongoing professional learning and development. We recognise the value teachers bring to our centre and appreciating them ensures they are committed to providing the best outcomes for children and their families.
